flowers from reused book pages, magazines or newspaper

You need:

• Pages from anold, reused book, magazine or newspaper(reuse always – never new use. Recycled crafts are hot.)
• Glue gun
• Buttons or covered cardboard disks (the inside waxy disk of a milk bottle top will do it)
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Sticky tape

How to make your paper craft flowers from book pages, magazines or newspaper:

1. Rip several pages from your book or newspaper (that have print on both sides) and make sure they are stacked evenly.

Cut the pages, all at once – so they are the same size – into even strips that are about 5cm wide.

Then cut thin strips 3/4 of the way into the paper all the way down.

2. Roll the strip up, pretty tight, pinching the bottom as you go.

3. Tape the bottom tightly. Stick a pencil in the middle and pull open the sides to spread it out like a flower. Set this aside.

4. Next you will repeat the same steps with another cut strip, only this time when you roll it up, roll it not so tight. You want to leave an opening to slip the first rolled layer into.

Open this one up also. First the bottom of the first rolled layer into this layer’s opening and secure tightly with a small blob of glue.

5. If you want an even thicker flower, you can repeat the above steps again, with the third layer having an even bigger hole.

Spread out the layers to your liking. You can also trim some of the inner layers for a more feathered effect.

6. Next, I hot glued some vintage buttons onto the centres. They really finish off the look! From there I hot glued the flowers into a small vase. It looks great on my bookshelves!

Eco-minded architects and designers are making treasure out of trash by recycling used PET bottles into beautiful, sustainable, buildings.

One of the wonderful things about being recycle-minded is that every piece of trash is an opportunity to recreate something wonderful.  At least, that's the way I felt when I saw testaments to the miracle of recycling — houses, cisterns, furniture, bus stops and even entire schools — made from recycled PET plastic bottles.

Eco-tec, an award-winning Honduran company, has used recycled PET plastic bottles for construction of houses, water tanks, and even schools.  

Using some 8,000 PET recycled bottles, Eco-Tec created the "casa ecológica" or ecological house, as a means of providing sustainable construction methods and employment in Honduras. 

70% of the structures built by Eco-Tec are made up of recycled PET bottles reclaimed from landfills and local clean-up projects.  The bottles are filled with sand and sealed before construction use.


Each casa ecologica  has a "living roof" made from sod and turf which insulates the house better than a conventional roof.  And although the roof weighs in at 30 metric tons when wet, the PET bottle walls to support the weight without effort.

Eco-Tec has gone beyond the experimental stages, and has tactually built over a dozen homes and community centers from PET bottles. 

It took Tomislav Radovanovic five years and 13,500 plastic bottles to build the 60 sq meter house in Kragujevac, Serbia. 

Only the foundation of the property is concrete, and all other parts of the house are made of plastic bottles that Radovanovic collected over many years.  Even the kitchen furniture and windows are made of plastic bottles.

This house can be found at Puerto Iguazu, a frontier town on the border between Argentina and Brazil. This amazing house, made by  Alfredo Santa Cruz and his family, is constructed entirely from recycled materials.  Over 1200 recycled PET bottles, 1300 Tetra Pak cartons, 140 CD cases which are used as doors and windows, and an additional 340 plastic bottles that have been recycled into couches and a bed. Mr. Santa Cruz and family now spend their time teaching others how to use recyclables as building materials.  

"Domestic waste can be transformed into useful stuff. We developed our own technique, which allows people to build a house that's perfectly functional at a very low cost and with their own hands. This is not just a project, but a reality," says Santa Cruz.

This striking bright orange schoolhouse in Granados, Guatemala, is constructed primarily of reclaimed plastic bottles.  

After noticing the amount of plastic trash littering Guatemalan streets and realizing that many schools did not even have walls, Peace Corps volunteer Laura Kutner decided to make a difference. 

With help of local businesses and volunteers, Kutner began work on a school house made from recycled PET bottles.  

Over 6,000 bottles were filled with plastic grocery bags, chip bags, and other waste, and were placed inside a metal fencing to create the structure. More trash was used to fill up the spaces between the fencing and the bottles.


Using recycled PET plastic bottles for construction offers an affordable, sustainable solution to the need for adequate building construction in developing countries.

ingredients:

• 1/2 cup flour
• 1/2 cup cornstarch
• 1/2 cup salt
• hot water

Combine the flour, cornstarch, and salt. Mix a little bit of tempera paint powder into the hot water, table spoon of olive oil and add it a little bit at a time to the dry mix, until it forms a sticky dough. The consistency should be similar to clay.


Roll the dough into small balls (these will be your beads) and poke a hole into each one with a pencil, knitting needle, ortoothpick. Make sure to make the hole is big enough for yarn or string to pass through.

When the clay is dry, it’s ready for beading. Cut a piece of yarn into the appropriate length for your child’snecklace or bracelet, wrap a piece of masking tape around one end to make stringing easier, knot the other end, and set them to work!

Some Ten Points for Better Life:

1. where ever required try to keep the AC temperature at comfort levels ie @23 C.the decrease in the temp will increase the power consumption and CO2 levels too.

2. Switch to a laptop instead of using a desktop computer and cut three-quarters off your electrical use. Turn off the laptop at the end of the day.

3. Turn off the lights when you aren’t using them and try to utilise the natural light whenever where ever. Stop using heat-producing halogen lamps they are in high power consumption as well heat generating.

4. Switch to cold water washing and save 80 percent on energy used for laundry and save an estimated $60 a year. Hang dry your clothes instead of using the dryer and save 700 pounds of C02 a year.

5. plug out or switch off the accessories or any thing works on electricity when not required,it saves energy as well lives. 

6. Switch to compact fluorescent from regular incandescent bulbs and use 60 percent less energy per bulb and save 300 pounds of C02 a year.

7. Keep a hand towel or a kerchief  to reduce the paper napkin usage

8.keep the hot water pipes through insulated media and get a water heater with good insulation

9. Use public transportation whenever possible, carpool, shop locally, and ideally switch to a hybrid or energy-efficient car 

10. Keep your tires inflated to improve  mileage by 3 percent. Every fuel you save also saves C02 emissions.

Isang Litrong Liwanag,

Not to worry ...about the pronunciation... 
Millions of Filipinos taking their name every " Day" for the invention...the revolution called  Isang Litrong Liwanag (A Liter of Light). 
Kudos to students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  Based on  simple physics  utilised in the project these students lit a light in to so many slum lives with the help of Mr.Illac Diaz of My shelter foundation. 
The students found that a one liter plastic bottle filled with bleach water and installed on top of a metal roof is a surprisingly simple way to light homes that have neither electrical connectivity nor natural lighting. 
The plastic defracts light and pushes it to every corner of a small slum house instead of beaming it onto one area like a typical lamp might.  
From this innovation inspired and a team of IIT-Bombay students working on Govandi slums now.  here some inspiration...

This is one of my earlier days work...very simple..
required are 

• a Binding wire/any steel wire which can be easily mend!
• A magazine cover (make sure that contains dark green and other multiple colours)

First take the wire desired length,Blunt the edges.

bend the wire like spring but after first circumference reduce the dia and make the top spring dia as smaller with a pointed end(see the picture)

Paste the magazine cover along with the wire that paper covers entire length.-leave it to dry

after dried-up cut the paper for leaves effect.hang colourful threads and small bells for decor

the final finish should be
